37:1 (2012) for double bass

The lowest string of a double bass, tuned down to a D natural, vibrates about 37 times per second. This simple piece expands the timeframe of a second into the timeframe of a piece. Each period of the vibration becomes its own iteration. Slowing down this singular note brings to attention the color and quality of the note, the subtle differences between attacks, and as the sound decays, an awareness of the sounds in the environment.
